Patrick Ring 4/16/84-2/6/14

Patrick passed away suddenly at his work on Feb 6th, 2014. The autopsy was inconclusive but the examiner was 95% sure the cause of death was SUDEP (sudden unexpected death in epilepsy). We hope to know more details when the full autopsy report is available and a researcher who specializes in SUDEP will be looking further at his heart and brain to help confirm if it was, in fact, SUDEP.

Patrick was diagnosed with partial complex seizures when he was 11 years old and had been on heavy doses of an anti-epileptic drug for most of his life.

He attended Freehold Borough High School and Westchester University in Westchester, PA. He had worked at W.B. Mason in Cranbury, NJ for over six years and was recently promoted to Customer Service Training Supervisor. He was passionate about his work, helping others, fishing with his brother, the Phillies, bowling, spending time with his fiancÚ, and being an avid Bruce Springsteen fan. He possessed the ability to bring out the best in others with his caring and kind nature.

What is SUDEP?

Most people with epilepsy live a full and healthy life, however they should be aware that epilepsy can be fatal. Some people with epilepsy may lose their lives from accidents or the underlying cause of their condition, such as tumors or genetic syndromes. But the leading epilepsy-related cause of death is believed to be Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy, also known as SUDEP. This frightening reality is too often hidden or ignored because the topic is difficult to discuss and the cause is unknown.

A death is referred to as a “SUDEP” when a seemingly healthy person with epilepsy dies unexpectedly and no reason for the death can be found.

To ensure SUDEP gets the public awareness and research attention it deserves, the Epilepsy Foundation has launched the SUDEP Institute, a collaboration among leading epilepsy organizations and experts, including the Epilepsy Foundation, CURE, SUDEP Aware, Danny Did Foundation and the American Epilepsy Society. The mission of the SUDEP Institute is to prevent SUDEP and support people learning about and confronting SUDEP.

I met you a few years ago through Tara. I believe one of the first times we hung out was the Zac Brown Band concert (LOL). You had a little too much fun and we had to distract the ticket guys so you can sneak in. Good times. I also remember the one time we met up when Jimmy had too much to drink and we all had a great time at Ciros. You were a great soul; kind, caring, non-judgmental, a true gem in this world. I have cried to Tara a few times, and you were kind enough to listen and give me advice as well. I am glad I was able to help you guys with watching Yoda every once in a while. I know you will anyway, but please come and visit my Tare bear. Come to her in her dreams, and remind her you're with her. Sweet dreams Pat, Rest easy.
